The so called 'famine Irish' that arrived in the 1850s, provided a great task force for simple jobs. They took over much of the work that helped fuel the economic expansion of the time. Many Irish immigrants arrived in Canada and soon after moved to the U.S. Some stayed and worked for a bit, this led to most of the economic growth in the 1850s.
