Ireland has always been divided into two main religions - Catholic and Protestant - these two groups are so distinct that sometimes they are treated as separate ethnic groups. Catholic-Irish immigrants were welcomed by the Canadian-Catholic church. Whereas the Protestant-Irish population generally had more money and found it easier to settle into Canada.
You may be wondering why there is such a big gap between the two main religious groups of Ireland. This has to do with their origins. Both groups were Irish, yet the Catholics tended to uphold Irish traditions more and the Protestants focused more on the contributions of the British empire. |
